“Infinite Worries Bash” from Catastrophe Cake by Caitlin & Misha

While the physical Boston Cyberarts Gallery interior remains closed due to COVID-19, we are organizing a series of art events and exhibitions to be seen from outside the gallery. "The Window Show" is an ever changing art exhibition in the Boston Cyberarts Gallery windows. Please visit here for special events and updates.

Boston Cyberarts is proud to present Catastrophe Cake by Caitlin & Misha on view in the windows of Boston Cyberarts Gallery 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Catastrophe Cake features a series of work responding to anxiety and politics during the pandemic that employ colorful and playful images referencing a party environment. This may seem absurd at first glance, but as we are not able to party and eat cake face-to-face amid the quarantine, the work speaks to the importance of collective experiences. The exhibition includes data visualization, sculpture and an audio-visual website customized for contactless interaction through Boston Cyberarts windows. Works include Infinite Worries Bash, Say Their Names, Sublimated Flight, Viral Vote, and a series of short animations.

Infinite Worries Bash

Movement in front of the screen will make a virtual stick smack a 3D rendered piñata-like sculpture on screen. A hit triggers the playback of worries the artists have been collecting from the public since the 2016 election. Coming full circle, Infinite Worries Bash is a means of reflecting, listening, and releasing anxieties as we navigate the 2020 election cycle. People are also invited to record their own worries by visiting the website on a personal device and using the “record a worry” link - https://worries.io/bash

Say Their Names

This is a tribute taking place on the virtual platform "Animal Crossing New Horizons", as a personal way to deal with the tragedy of countless unjust killings at the hands of police. Black Lives Matter.

Sublimated Flight

Sublimation of waste heat from a computer crunching on a community data sharing project powers a sculpture adorned with festive wings heralding community resilience. The Helium miner heats up using the proof of location coverage blockchain and enables a low-power wide-area network for the internet of things. Any waste heat from enough usage drives a winged stirling engine. All tokens mined during this experiment will be sold and donated to the ACLU.

Viral Vote

This is a video demo of a browser AR toy made in Spring 2020 at the start of the pandemic about voting anxiety under the threat of viral loads. You can play yourself by visiting https://caitlinandmisha.com/viralvote/

Other windows of the gallery play short animations including infographics about election turnout by age featuring cupcake percentage charts and trends of Covid-19 infections visualized in a precariously balanced cake. Each of these works questions how we balance the public with the personal, self-care with the need for action, and absurdities with the hard realities of our political landscape.
